Quick Picks ~ This Week's Top 3 Reads

It's been awhile but Quick Picks is back!

hhttps://media.giphy.com/media/g2uwulDy10Jdm/giphy.gif

A massive thank you to all of you guys for being patient with me over the last couple of months as I took a bit of a health hiatus from blogging and reviewing. Taking a break to focus on my health is a decision I am truly thankful I made, but I missed reviewing and am so, so happy to be back!

This past week I've indulged in some great reads.

Today I'm bringing three of these to your attention: The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon, Nightstruck by Jenna Black, and The Trials of Apollo: The Dark Prophecy by Rick Riordan.

Each of these reads had something in common.

All three novels had plots whose unique concepts captured my imagination from the start. I hope they will intrigue you, entertain you, and above all have you falling in love with them just as much as I did.

A big thank you to Allen & Unwin, BloomsburyPan Macmillan Australia, and Penguin Random House Australia for sending me these copies to review.

Let's get listing!

Here There Be Dragons ~ The Dragons of Nova by Elise Kova Review

Elise Kova breathes new life into the steampunk genre.

https://68.media.tumblr.com/a182aa4af4ae29f53832be9519dbaa5e/tumblr_nzxoa09fYn1s9yfq0o1_500.gif

I've always adored steampunk. It's the perfect mix of technology ingenuity and magic, setting fire to our imaginations and testing reality's boundaries.

But after reading books from the genre for such a long time, one starts to develop a 'sixth sense' - an irksome feeling that you know all there is to know about a genre. You're no longer wowed by dirigibles or by goggles with cogs. You find patterns in use, authors borrowing from other authors. Nothing seems original anymore.

Elise Kova's steampunk world - Loom, Dragons, Guilds and all their magic - is such a refreshing change of pace. It's vivid, new, and filled with inventions and concepts that will have your mind whirring with possibilities. And it's latest addition, The Dragons of Nova, is just as utterly spellbinding as its predecessor.

A big thank you to Keymaster Press and Elise Kova for the chance to review this incredible book.

Read on for my thoughts on The Dragons of Nova (as well as my favourite quote from te book!).

May Library Haul ~ Hit or Miss

This month's library haul was an exciting line up.

https://secure.static.tumblr.com/82527938c6c71592639861f2d514548b/tkpokfw/QFdo85t4d/tumblr_static_tumblr_static_14jpjvscbltwg0o4gcw4wcgo8_640.gif

As is the case with most public libraries, finding the books you're looking for is never an easy feat. So when I spotted several members of my TBR list, I just had to grab them up before they disappeared into the borrower void again!

All of these titles are ones that I've been meaning to read for awhile now, so I definitely approached each one with high hopes. Some lived up to the other bookworm's stellar reviews and my own expectations...whilst others unfortunately missed the mark.

Find out more about this month's hits and misses below!

Girl in Between by Anna Daniels ~ Blog Tour

In fiction authors often try to capture the essence of life.

https://68.media.tumblr.com/2b46d7df49178551541f580b3a1c7ad1/tumblr_nwhngcVg4p1rm7ibko1_500.gif

They work on constructing the quirks and trials that make up the messy fabric of reality. Painting flawed portraits of multi-faceted characters, they create people who walk the line between being likeable and relatable.

If done well, this balancing act results in a book that is dear to the heart - an old friend whose story speaks to you on a deeper, realer level.

Anna Daniels' Girl in Between is a book that will light up your life.

The Missing Pieces Of Us by Fleur McDonald ~ Review

Some stories are 'middle of the road'.

https://68.media.tumblr.com/fb6538bc01a989bf63a28933513caf7f/tumblr_nkpp5rfUXA1u95hrmo1_500.gif

They connect just enough to give readers a sense of realism, but still contain a fair amount of 'simulation'. Whether it's the actions or words of its characters, the forced nature of a plot twist, or even a conveniently placed solution - sometimes stories can work against themselves and lose their organic flow.

Other stories are 'high achievers'.

https://consequenceofsound.files.wordpress.com/2017/02/beyonce-grammys.gif

They blur the lines between reality and fiction. Their authors breathe life into raw, flawed characters, whose lives and struggles mirror our own.

The Missing Pieces Of Us goes above and beyond.

Thanks to Allen and Unwin I was able to read and review the incredible The Missing Pieces Of Us by author Fleur McDonald. Not only does it have a stunning outside, but the story within was both intriguing and informative.

Villains ~ Guest Post ft. Library Luv

Everybody loves a good villain.

https://media.giphy.com/media/kvLM7ujMnzCSY/giphy.gif

When my lovely friend Library Luv came up with the idea of us working on two guests posts a month for one another, we sat down to brainstorm a list of topic ideas. Choosing which one to start off with was a difficult decision! But we finally settled on a topic that had us delving into the world of villains and evil doers.

Running this blog has given me the chance to meet so many incredible people.

Who are the complete opposite of villains! One of these is book blogger Library Luv. She runs Beyond The Book Reviews and is a book blogger of mostly YA fiction. And can I just say that I'm so excited to have her back on my blog! Working with her is lots of fun and her posts are always so creative.

So read on for Library Luv's 'Top Three Literary Villains' (you can find my list over on her blog here).

Long Way Home (Thunder Road #3) by Katie McGarry ~ Review

Queen Katie McGarry is back at it again with another Thunder Road adventure!

https://68.media.tumblr.com/a6d53879a65250286d4bce4f6ea3a329/tumblr_objic9pIWl1uf0dmwo1_500.gif

I can't believe we're up to the third Thunder Road novel already! The first novel, Nowhere But Here, seems like it came out just yesterday (but it was actually released mid 2015 how crazy is that?!). From Emily and Oz, to Breanna and Razor...and now finally we've come to Violet and Chevy's tumultuous romance.

Long Way Home is a YA contemporary romance novel published by Harlequin Teen and brings us the epic love story between Violet and Chevy with all its ups and downs, and twists and turns.

A big thank you to Harlequin Australia and Harlequin Teen (AUS) for providing me with a review copy of this book. And be sure to grab your copy of the next book in this emotionally charged series so you don’t miss out on more Katie McGarry goodness.

Read on for more info on the book, my thoughts, and more!
