Jane Unwrapped by Leah & Kate Rooper ~ Review, Interview + Giveaway

Let me introduce you to a book you'll be dying to read...

As many of you may be aware, I simply adore all things mythology - especially ancient Egyptian mythology.

So when I was given the opportunity to read & review Jane Unwrapped by Leah and Kate Rooper I just knew that it was the kind of book that I would fall instantly in love with. And I was right! Two pages in and I was already tuning out the outside world, perfectly content to sit down all day with a book that had gripped me with its brilliant characters and unique plot.

It's female protagonist, Jane, was witty, conflicted, and the kind of girl I instantly knew I'd be friends with in real life. Her love of science and quirky facts brought life to the story, making her more than just your average heroine. Her character development shocked me with its rapid but well-thought-out pace - she faced many challenges but emerged triumphant, wearing her emotional and physical scars proudly.

And the book's male protagonist was just as amazing...deadly amazing! Yes, yes, I was very tempted to include a whole array of death puns when discussing the hottie that is Anubis, but I will restrain myself ;)

The Rooper sisters' Anubis is by far one of the best adaptions of a mythological persona I have come across. Anubis was just the right blend of clueless, stoic, and self-righteous ancient god mixed with the adorableness, good looks and sly humour of a YA bad boy. The chemistry between him and Jane was off the charts! They helped each other grow and become better versions of themselves, challenged one another, and made great friends long before romance blossomed.

If you love comedy, romance, time-travelling, and mythology...Jane Unwrapped is definitely for you!

Then you're in luck! Read on for an exclusive interview with the book's stars, Jane and Anubis...

Booknut: Thanks so much for coming in today, guys! It's lovely to meet you Jane...and Anubis...can I call you Anubis? I mean, if you'd rather me call you the Prince of the Duat, or Lord of the Jackals I can totally do that too.

Jane: Oo, I like Lord of the Jackals!
Anubis: Anubis. Just Anubis is fine.
Jane: Fine. The Prince of the Duat has spoken!

Booknut: So, Jane, I noticed that you're a science fan - as seen by your rather handy penicillin tea! What got you first hooked on it?

Jane: Uh, well, you know, I’ve been into science for as long as I can remember. When I was a kid, I couldn’t ride a bike, and I didn’t make friends as easily as my brother Duncan, and everyone always picked me last in gym class…but when I was alone looking at stuff in the garden or wandering the library…things sort of made more sense, you know?

Booknut: Anubis, what was your first impression of Jane?

Anubis: There was something different about her from the very beginning. The souls that usually come to the Duat are scared, dutiful things…and a heartless soul is more pitiful still. Yet Jane…she was so full of life…curious…defiant.
Jane: You were going to EAT ME! What, did you expect me just to sit around and wait for you to put your slobbery jaws around me?
Anubis: Oh, yes, so running off to the psychopathic Aten was a GREAT choice!
Jane: He was a lot nicer than you!

Booknut: And what did you think of Anubis when you first met him, Jane?

Jane: He was super creepy.
Anubis: I am not creepy.
Jane: Members of kingdom Animalia, phylum Chordata, class Mammalia, order Carnivora, family Canidae, genus Canis, species Canis aureus CAN NOT TALK!

Booknut: If someone was transported from the 21st century straight into ancient Egypt, what is the best piece of advice you could give them?

Jane: Well, the first thing I’d do—
Anubis: Are you really qualified to give advice on this subject?
Jane: What do you mean am I qualified?!
Anubis: Well, to begin, you made a deal with a crazy god, got captured by the general of the Egyptian army, willingly put yourself in the middle of a battle zone, and, oh, attempted to murder the pharaoh of Egypt! Should I go on?
Jane:

Booknut: Who is your favorite historical figure and why?

Jane: Easy! My favorite historical figure is Charles Darwin. That’s the main reason I wanted to study at Cambridge, because he studied there too! Charles Darwin is so fascinating because—
Anubis: Excuse me?
Jane: What?
Anubis: Favorite historical figure? *looks self up and down*
Jane: You’re more of a mythological figure.
Anubis: I’m standing right here!

Booknut: Anubis, I noticed that in the book you take on quite a few different forms. Which is your favourite?

Anubis: I spent centuries in my jackal form, so I am most comfortable that way. But I can definitely tell you what Jane’s favorite form of mine is…
Jane: Hey! What are you saying?
Anubis: Oh please, like you haven’t ogled my paries abdominalis, as you’d call it.
Jane: I’m interested in human anatomy!

Booknut: If your life was a book, what would the title be?

Anubis: The Book of the Dead.
Jane: That’s not very original. What about…Jane and the Annoying Jackal?
Anubis: More like Poor God Must Prevent Naïve Mortal From Dying Daily.
Jane: Like you said, I’m already dead!

Booknut: Describe your ideal date.

Jane: Err, uhh, well, I’ve never been on a date before. *turns to Anubis* H-have you been on a date?
Anubis: Can’t say Aten’s ever expressed an interest. And what a shame too…we could wander through the fog together, admire the sights like his hourglass tower and all the dead souls.
Jane: Uh, sounds romantic!

Booknut: What is your biggest fear?

Jane: I’ve always been so afraid of not doing anything with my life. I feel like life is a rare and precious opportunity to really make a difference…and it’s my responsibility to make use of it!
Anubis: I…I fear watching the ones I love suffer…to pay for my mistakes or to endure pain I could have prevented.

Booknut: Well thank you so much, both of you, for sitting down with me today. It was a pleasure to meet you both!

Jane: Thank you for having us! Keep discovering!
Anubis: May your soul rest peacefully in paradise.
Jane: Do you have to sound so…brooding?
Anubis: It’s a standard farewell!
